Event Countdown is an app that can add event widgets to a desktop. It can take these events from a companion calendar app, or add them to a calendar as appropriate. The widgets are good-looking but use exclusively bright colours, making the app a bit less accessible overall. They function near perfectly and offer a number of other options, however.
